TALLAHASSEE
- The Florida A&M University (FAMU)
family is mourning the loss of former
first lady Antoinette McTurner Humphries,
wife of FAMU's eighth president, Dr. Frederick
S. Humphries.
Interim
President Castell Vaughn Bryant said,
"Mrs. Humphries was a gracious and
extraordinary first lady with an easy
smile and a giving heart. At her husband's
side, she gave of herself and her time
during the 16 years that he served as
president. Her quiet charm was present
at various receptions, student activities,
special affairs and other FAMU events.
Her service to students and the community
will certainly be her legacy.
"Our
hearts go out to her husband, Dr. Humphries;
her three children, Frederick Jr., Tanya
and Laurence, and their spouses; grandchildren;
and the entire McTurner and Humphries
families."
"While
the FAMU family is deeply saddened by
her death, Antoinette Humphries has left
an indelible mark on FAMU," Bryant
added. "We hope that the Humphries
will find solace in their fond memories
of Mrs. Humphries and peace in knowing
that she will not be forgotten."
During
her tenure as FAMU's first lady, Mrs.
Humphries was instrumental in sponsoring
the Christmas Toys for Tots Drive and
for providing scholarships for third year
theatre majors through the "Toni"
Awards Program that was named for her.
In
lieu of flowers, the family requests that
contributions be made to the Antoinette
McTurner Humphries Endowed Scholarship
Fund. Contributions should be mailed to
FAMU Foundation, 200 Lee Hall, Tallahassee,
Fla., 32307. Memorial services have been
held.
