The Florida Courier - As we see it or question it

By Charles W. Cherry II

Calling all black Republicans; come out of the closet! Many of you have complained about a Democratic Party 'bias' in black newspapers. The Florida Courier wants to print what you have to say. It's time for some discussion from both ends of the political spectrum. We believe that black Floridians will make decisions, especially during this election year, based on the issues. We will print guest commentaries on just about any issue, whether conservative or progressive, secular or religious, if we believe it's of interest to our readership.

Florida black male study: Good idea, Rep. Peterman, just so the numbers would tell our fellow Floridians what we already know: it's hard out here for brothers, whether you have been on this planet for two years or twenty, nine years or ninety. Once the bad news is 'scientifically' proven by Florida's college/university researchers, much like it has been proven nationally by Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia, then what? It's going to take political will, black community support, involvement and perseverance, and millions of dollars to attack the problems of health, education, public safety, and economics that so negatively impact black males in this state.

And what about the abject fear and objectification of black men that conveniently categories us as hip-hoppers, thugs, prisoners, defendants, at-risk populations? Will we black men change our mindsets about ourselves? Our African ancestors said, 'it's not what you call me; it's what I answer to.' Will we make personal commitments to discipline ourselves to make necessary changes and take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves? Will we individually begin to make better decisions for ourselves? This study is a first step, and we fully support it. There's no reason it should not sail through the legislature. We are encouraged that Black Florida can do what is necessary to improve the lives of black boys and men throughout the state.

Dante Culpepper: Glad to have you, and welcome back. God knows the Dolphins need help at quarterback. You did your time in Minnesota with dignity and grace. Handle that crazy boat ride-stripper business; the criminal charges should never have been filed. As for Minnesota fans and coaches, the haters are gonna hate. Performing well is the best revenge. And when you have some free time, get involved with the good things happening around Black Florida, and lend a hand when you can, to help uplift our people. There's plenty of work for all of us to do.
