A&M Hires New Compliance Director
By Vernon Floyd
FAMU
has announced the hiring of a new NCAA Compliance
director, Rosalyn Dunlap, J.D.
Ms. Dunlap, whose title will be assistant athletic
director for
compliance, is the former director of athletic
compliance at the
University of Missouri (1997-98). In addition,
she served as senior women's administrator and
assistant athletic director for compliance at
San Francisco State University (1996-97), and
as senior women's administrator and assistant
athletic director for academic services at St.
Mary's (CA) College (1992-96).
Also, FAMU is advertising for a new vice president
of audit
and compliance position that will be responsible
for university-wide compliance issues.
Workshops, seminars, publications and other
means of communication are being developed by
the athletic administration to educate the university
community regarding NCAA rules, regulations
and procedures.
This action comes on the heels of the FAMU self-study
report of NCAA violations that is being made
available to media effective immediately.
The report was conducted by an independent agency
recommended by they commissioner of the Mid-Eastern
Athletic Conference and is part of an on-going
thorough investigation of the university's athletic
program. The self-study was initiated by FAMU
and is representative of the
university's commitment to preserving its great
tradition in athletics.
FAMU took immediate and comprehensive steps
to address all
questionable issues regarding its athletic program
and is determined to put safeguards in place
to prevent any such violations from occurring
again.

NFL Hall of Fame
The
NFL Hall of Fame increased by four on Sunday
when Dan Marino, Steve Young, Fritz Pollard
and Benny Friedman were formerly inducted. Marino,
Young and Friedman join 21 other quarterbacks
in the Hall.
There is much discussion as to who is the greatest
quarterback of all-time, with some so called
experts placing Marino at about fifth or sixth
on the list. The main reason is because he never
won a Super Bowl ring.
However, there can be no doubt about the greatest
pure passer; Marino wins this one by a long
shot. His many records give testimony to this
fact.
The Courier would like to give recognition to
Fritz Pollard who was finally inducted into
the Hall of Fame almost 20 years after his death.
In 1921, he became the first African-American
head coach in NFL history. Although only 5'9",
165 pounds, he was the most feared running back
in the league. In 1928, he organized and coached
the Chicago Black Hawks, an all-African-American
professional team.
